Hello everyone,
Welcome to Montreal! As international students, there’s no better way to get to know this vibrant city than by exploring its diverse neighborhoods, cultural landmarks, and natural beauty. Whether you’re new to the city or just looking for some weekend adventure ideas, here are a few fun activities and trips you might enjoy:
1. Mount Royal Park (Parc du Mont-Royal)
One of Montreal’s most iconic spots, Mount Royal Park offers stunning views of the city skyline. Whether you’re into hiking, picnicking, or just taking in the scenery, it’s a perfect place to unwind. Don’t forget to check out the Kondiaronk Belvedere for panoramic views, especially at sunset!
2. Old Montreal (Vieux-Montréal)
Step back in time by wandering through Old Montreal’s cobblestone streets. Explore historical sites like the Notre-Dame Basilica, take a walk along the Old Port, and enjoy some of the city’s best cafes and restaurants. It’s a fantastic area for a relaxed day out.
3. Jean-Talon Market
For those who love food, Jean-Talon Market is a must-visit. Located in Little Italy, it’s one of the largest public markets in North America. You can find fresh produce, artisanal products, and a variety of international cuisines. It’s a great spot to grab some ingredients and cook a meal with friends.
4. Lachine Canal
Rent a kayak, paddleboard, or bike and spend a day exploring the Lachine Canal. The canal offers a scenic route through Montreal and is perfect for those who enjoy outdoor activities. There are also plenty of spots along the way to stop for a picnic or just relax by the water.
5. Day Trip to Mont-Tremblant
If you’re up for a short weekend getaway, Mont-Tremblant is just a couple of hours away by bus or car. Known for its beautiful landscapes, it’s a top spot for hiking in the summer and skiing in the winter. The village itself is charming and offers plenty of shops, cafes, and activities.
6. Visit the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts
For art enthusiasts, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is a must-see. It has an impressive collection of artwork ranging from classical to contemporary. The museum also hosts various temporary exhibitions, so there’s always something new to discover.
7. Explore the Plateau Mont-Royal
The Plateau is one of Montreal’s most eclectic neighborhoods, filled with colorful murals, quirky shops, and a wide variety of restaurants. Take a stroll down Saint-Denis Street or Mount Royal Avenue, and don’t miss a visit to La Banquise for some classic poutine!
8. Attend a Festival
Montreal is known for its festivals, and there’s always something happening no matter the season. From the International Jazz Festival to the Just for Laughs comedy festival, these events are a fantastic way to experience the city’s lively culture and meet new people.
9. Day Trip to Quebec City
For a longer weekend trip, consider visiting Quebec City. It’s about a three-hour drive from Montreal and offers a unique glimpse into Canada’s history with its well-preserved old town, charming streets, and historic landmarks.
10. Explore the Underground City
During the colder months, Montreal’s Underground City offers a network of tunnels connecting shopping centers, restaurants, and metro stations. It’s a great way to explore the city while staying warm, and you might find some hidden gems along the way.
